Martin Short and Hozier have celebrated both the holiday season and their respective returns to Saturday Night Live in the latest promo clips released for this weekend’s episode.
The episode, which airs on Saturday (Dec. 21) will be the first musical appearance from Hozier since 2014, when former SNL alum Bill Hader took on hosting duties. Since 2014 (when he appeared to support his self-titled debut album), he’s released two more albums, with 2023’s Unreal Unearth peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Short, meanwhile, will join the Five-Timers Club with his upcoming hosting gig. Previously a cast member during the 1984-1985 season, Short has hosted 1986, 1996, 2012, and 2022, with his upcoming appearance making him the first former cast member of the Dick Ebersol era to join the Club.
For the latest promo clips of the episode, Short and Hozier find themselves joined by Kenan Thompson as they introduce themselves to viewers. “It’s the Christmas show, so that’s always fun,” adds Thompson. “Is it? Shouldn’t someone put some decorations up?” asks Short. As Hozier agrees it’s “a little bit bare”, an angry Thompson exits the heavily-made up set to request more decorations.
“Martin, don’t you just love Christmas?” asks Thompson in another promo. “Well actually I prefer to celebrate the ancient Roman holiday Saturnalia, so Christmas is just ‘Wednesday’ for me,” he adds. “A fellow Saturnite?” queries Hozier before Thompson wishes everyone a happy Saturnalia (which runs from Dec. 17 – 23 in 2024).
For their last promo, an agitated Short wraps up his appearance by requesting a better script for Christmas in lieu of the “dribble” he was apparently delivered previously.
