Angel Carter has discussed experiencing “so much loss” following the deaths of three of her siblings.
The model-advocate’s sister Bobbie Jean Carter died at the age of 41 in December 2023, her twin brother Aaron Carter passed away at the age of 34 in November 2022, and her older sibling Leslie Carter died at the age of 25 in 2012.
All three deaths were attributed to accidental drug overdoses.
In an interview for People published on Monday, Angel explained that she is still struggling with grief over the losses in her family. However, she makes an effort to honour each of them on special occasions.
“Having so much loss in my life, I do know what to expect to a certain extent now, and I want to continue to honour my family,” she said. “So in those moments on those anniversaries – Aaron and I just had a birthday, we just turned 37 – and I really just try to be in peace and in that moment as much as I can and just honour them by talking to them and allowing them to still be present in my life.”
Angel also shared how she is determined to break the “generational dysfunction” within her family regarding addiction.
“The last couple of years, I’ve just been really trying to educate myself about this disease and how it affects people and how it causes things that they do that they may not mean to do,” the mother-of-one commented, before referencing the pressure Aaron faced as a young artist. “I look back at Aaron’s life, and me and my sisters as well, and our innocence was taken away from us. Especially Aaron, being a child star and working like an adult in the entertainment industry.”
Meanwhile, Angel noted that she is now supporting the team at the Kids Mental Health Foundation and hopes to be able to tap into her knowledge to help others.
“Volunteering my time, raising awareness, raising funds for this organisation and just continuing the conversation about mental health and the stigma that surrounds it,” she added.
