Mariah Carey has insisted she never predicted All I Want for Christmas Is You would be a hit.
Co-written and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff, the track was originally included on her 1994 holiday album, titled Merry Christmas.
The song has gone on to become a festive standard, and during a recent interview for Billboard, Mariah admitted that she can’t quite believe people love the song so much.
“I think it’s an amazing thing that just happened, that I never could have predicted,” she said in the video. “Because the song, All I Want For Christmas Is You, just grew and grew. And slowly though, it wasn’t like an immediate thing.”
The song made the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart for the first time in December 2017, and finally reached the coveted top spot for the first time in 2019. It has repeated the achievement every year since, including this year.
Having adopted the moniker of the Queen of Christmas, Mariah embarked on a festive tour of U.S. cities over the past two months, although a few were cancelled due to illness.
As part of her shows, the superstar performed a mix of timeless holiday classics and fan favourites.
“It’s really a fun thing to do, the Christmas tour, it really is,” the Believe hitmaker smiled.
And while Mariah starts planning for Christmas Day in November, she always prepares her father Alfred Carey’s recipe for linguine with white clam sauce for the meal.
“I have to make it for myself. It’s just not the same. No offence to anybody, but I just have to do my own way. It’s a very simple recipe, and it’s about really getting the grit out of the clams. And no, I do not use canned clams,” she shared in a conversation for Vanity Fair.
