Perfume Genius has announced his new album, ‘Glory’, and shared its reflective lead single, ‘It’s A Mirror’.
Opening with a stocky folk-rock riff and fuelled by Perfume Genius’ – real name Mike Hadreas – emotionally soft vocals, the musician uses ‘It’s A Mirror’ to reflect on being overwhelmed and ending up stuck in an isolating loop.
Speaking about the song in a press release, Hadreas shared: “I wake up overwhelmed even when nothing is going on. I spend the rest of the day trying to regulate, which I prefer to do at home alone with my thoughts. But why? They are mostly bad. They also haven’t really changed for decades.
“I wrote ‘It’s a Mirror’ while stuck in one of these isolating loops, seeing that something different and maybe even beautiful is out there but not quite knowing how to venture out. I have a lot more practice keeping the door closed.”
Directed by Cody Critcheloe, the song’s accompanying music video sees Perfume Genius waking up in a vast bedroom before riding a motorcycle that ends up getting into a crash. From there, he walks through a highway and begins getting circled by a biker gang.
He proceeds to walk up to a billboard with the word glory on it located next to a gas pump. A second version of him walks up to the pump and begins dowsing himself in petrol before looking at the camera and striking a match before the screen goes black.
Produced by Blake Mills, Perfume Genius’ longtime collaborator, ‘Glory’ deals with the “back and forth between internal and external.” It marks Hadreas’ seventh album, following 2022’s ‘Ugly Season‘. ‘Glory’ is set for release on March 28 via Matador and is available for pre-order here.
The ‘Glory’ tracklist is:
1. ‘It’s a Mirror’
2. ‘No Front Teeth’ (feat. Aldous Harding)
3. ‘Clean Heart’
4. ‘Me & Angel’
5. ‘Left For Tomorrow’
6. ‘Full On’
7. ‘Capezio’

In a four-star review of Perfume Genius’s 2022 LP ‘Ugly Season’, NME shared: “‘Ugly Season’ might be indulgent, but Hadreas is still able to weave in the tender and immediate songwriting that made ‘Set My Heart On Fire’ so engaging (just as he wove his experimental streak into that record). There is, after all, a track called ‘Pop Song’, on which a beautiful, highly emotive vocal melody rises shimmering over a skittering instrumental; powerful, nuanced and forward-thinking.
In other news, Perfume Genius recently made three new bonus tracks from his 2014 album ‘Too Bright’ available publically.
