Ahead of the release of their new album, Oh! The Ocean, The Wombats’ frontman Matthew Murphy joined Dan O’Connell in the Radio X studio last night, where he revealed that sobriety has both ‘increased his bandwidth dramatically’ and allowed him to ‘feel more creative.’

Dan O’Connell – DOC
MM: “A big thing that’s happened for me that differentiates this album from others is sobriety and the fact that now life is infinitely stranger, and my bandwidth of high highs and low lows has increased dramatically. So I don’t know. I feel more creative as a result of that I think.”
DOC: “Which is a paradox almost. Because many people think that if they stop drinking or taking drugs or somehow put down the pills or whatever it is for you, that you’re going to be left with nothing. You know, ‘Who will I be without this crutch?’”
MM: “Yeah, and that’s usually the drink or the substance actually communicating and trying to get you into a state of such fear that you don’t do anything about it, I think. But yeah, I have found the complete opposite to be honest. Although I am very grateful to my past. Because alcohol, you know, it makes you move, it makes you travel, it makes you see new places and meet new people. So for that, I have to remain a bit grateful.”
