A new cultural era: V&A East Museum opens with landmark Black British Music Exhibition

Stratford’s skyline has a bold new addition as the V&A East Museum officially launched this week at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The opening festivities, held on April 14 and 15, 2026, marked the arrival of one of the UK’s most ambitious cultural institutions in a decade and unveiled its inaugural exhibition: The Music is Black: A British Story.

The museum’s debut was spread across two nights of high-energy celebrations. Tuesday offered guests an exclusive first look at the permanent displays, hosted by Director Gus Casely-Hayford. The following evening, the focus shifted to the museum’s collaboration with BBC Music, drawing a heavy-hitting crowd of industry icons including AJ Tracey, Beverley Knight, Eve, MNEK, and Clara Amfo.

Guests were treated to a curated music program featuring legends like Fabio & Grooverider and DJ Paulette, alongside emerging talents from the BBC Introducing stage. The atmosphere, fueled by English sparkling wine from partner Nyetimber, perfectly mirrored the vibrant, boundary-pushing spirit of the exhibition itself.

Curated by Jacqueline Springer, The Music is Black: A British Story is a multi-sensory journey through more than 125 years of history. Spanning over 200 objects—60 of which are new acquisitions—the exhibition highlights how Black British genres like Lovers Rock, Jungle, Grime, and UK Garage have reshaped global culture.

The collection is remarkably diverse, ranging from:

Legendary Instruments: Winifred Atwell’s piano and the Nintendo console used by JME for early musical experiments.

Iconic Fashion: Pieces worn by Little Simz, Seal, Skin, and Dame Shirley Bassey.

Rare Imagery: Newly acquired photographs featuring Skepta, Mis-Teeq, and the drum & bass duo Kemistry and Storm.

Located on East Bank, the museum joins the V&A East Storehouse (opened in 2025) as a cornerstone of the Mayor of London’s 2012 Olympic legacy. The project is a collaboration with the BBC that extends beyond the museum walls, including a season of educational programming and the upcoming Music Is Black Festival set for Summer 2026.

V&A East Museum officially opens its doors to the public on Saturday, 18 April 2026. Supported by the Ford Foundation and Sennheiser, it stands as a testament to the voices and talent that have defined the British story.
