All the Surprise Guests at Coachella This Year

Will Ferrell, Huntr/x, Becky G, Lizzo, and Camila Cabello made unexpected appearances at the festival

This year’s Coachella line-up included an all-star list of names and tons of build-up around certain sets. Everyone wondered what Justin Bieber would do in his first massive performance in years, fans delighted as they guessed how Karol G would approach her historic show as the festival’s first Latina headliner, and people placed their bets over whether Katseye member Manon Bannerman would perform with her crew or not.

Between all those questions and speculation, Coachella packed in other surprises with a slew of special guests, like it does every year. Unlikely names appeared at just about every corner of the festival: Will Ferrell showed up in Sabrina Carpenter’s kitschy, cameo-filled mega set on Friday night, Camila Cabello came out to sing “Havana” for the first time in years with Young Thug, and Tems and Wizkid punctuated Bieber’s anticipated moment. In between, there were stars like Becky G, MIA, Joe Jonas, Lizzo, David Lee Roth, and so much more popping up all around the fest. Here’s a list of everyone who showed up.

  • Huntr/x With Katseye

Katseye played one of the most anticipated sets of the entire festival, with fans caught up in whether member Manon Bannerman would show up or not. Ultimately, she did not, but the crowd roared when a few other surprise guests made an appearance:  EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami of Huntr/x  came out to sing “Golden.” — Julyssa Lopez

Turnstile rocked the crowd on Friday afternoon, their set emotionally heightened after an incident with their ex-guitarist made headlines. However, they focused on putting on a raucous live show, and even got Blood Orange to play cello for “SEEIN’ STARS.” —J.L.

  • Will Ferrell With Sabrina Carpenter

Will Ferrell came to the rescue during Sabrina Carpenter’s headlining set on Friday night. The actor made a surprise appearance in the Hollywood-themed performance as a handyman there to fix an electrical problem. “Typical Coachella,” he said as he reconnected two giant plugs that powered the neon and flashing lights that illuminated the stage around Carpenter. —Larisha Paul

The last time Sabrina Carpenter appeared at Coachella, she predicted the future by announcing that she’d play the festival next as the headliner. The artist looked into the future again Friday evening by casting Susan Sarandon as an older version of herself. The veteran actress delivered a seven-minute long monologue in the middle of the seat that ruminated on youth, longevity, and ambition before Carpenter sang “Go Go Juice.” —L.P.

  • Corey Fogelmanis With Sabrina Carpenter

Last year, Sabrina Carpenter arrested her good friend and former Girl Meets World co-star Corey Fogelmanis during “Juno” at one of her Madison Square Garden shows. At Coachella, she cast him in a different role: the person who finally brought Susan Sarandon’s winding monologue to an end. As it turns out, the actress was delivering her lines in a drive-thru, and Fogelmanis just wanted her to tip and drive away. —L.P.

Moby’s a longtime Coachella vet (he was actually on the lineup for the very first fest in 1999), so to mix things up for his set in the Mojave tent this year he brought up Gabriels’ singer Jacob Lusk to blast through his peak-era classics “Natural Blues” and “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die.” Backed by a massive live band and flanked by a very animated Moby, Lusk blew the crowd away by adding a bit of soulfulness to the beats-driven tracks. —J.M.

The rappers opened their Outdoor Theater set with four songs featuring Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, who added sharp snare snaps to their sparse beats. He sounded great backing Malice and Pusha T on “Chains & Whips” and “Inglorious Bastards” — maybe Clipse should consider touring as a trio? —J.M.
