Bad Bunny has scored the lead role in an upcoming Caribbean western and historical epic.

The film, titled Porto Rico, marks the first leading film role for Benito ‘Bad Bunny’ Martínez Ocasio. The cast also includes Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton and Javier Bardem.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper René ‘Residente’ Pérez Joglar makes his directorial debut with the feature, which is being billed as a love letter to his native island of Puerto Rico.

The historical drama is based on the life of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, known as Águila Blanca or White Eagle. The action takes place on the island in the late 19th century, when Román fought against colonialism as the leader of a gang of ex-convicts.

The project arrives following Bad Bunny’s smash hit Super Bowl halftime show performance earlier this month, his own tribute to Puerto Rico, where he was born in 1994. The show, which was watched by 128.2 million viewers worldwide, has spiked flight searches to the island by 245 per cent, according to Expedia

Bad Bunny’s previous big screen credits include 2020’s My Spy, 2022’s Bullet Train, and Caught Stealing in 2025.

In the wake of the Super Bowl show on 8 February, he has made Billboard history as the first artist to occupy the entire Top 25 slots on the Hot Latin Songs Chart.
