Bonnie Tyler has been placed in a medically induced coma at a Portugal hospital, according to local news outlets.
Tyler was hospitalised in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, about a week ago and taken in for emergency surgery on a perforated intestine, the Daily Mail reported.
According to media outlets including the BBC and Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, Tyler’s condition worsened today, and she has been placed in a medically induced coma on a ventilator.
Her representatives confirmed the reports, stating that “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time, please.”
The Total Eclipse Of The Heart singer’s condition is reported to be “very guarded”.
The news comes after earlier upbeat reports suggested she was on the road to recovery.
Her official website confirmed the hospitalisation yesterday and issued a statement sharing that the “surgery went well and she is now recuperating”.
The husky-voiced singer hit the charts in 1977 with her single It’s a Heartache. She hit the No. 1 spot with the jukebox anthem Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983, and the following year released the single Holding Out for a Hero, which featured on the soundtrack of the 1984 film Footloose.
