British music celebrates 11th year of growth as new talent takes the global stage

The UK recorded music market reached new heights in 2025, marking its 11th consecutive year of growth. According to newly released BPI data, consumption rose by 4.9% to a record 210.3 million albums, driven by a historic milestone: the UK surpassed 200 billion annual audio streams for the first time.

The Dawn of a New Generation

While established icons like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay continued to break records, 2025 belonged to a surging wave of breakthrough talent. Olivia Dean made chart history as the first woman to achieve her first No. 1 single and album in the same week, while Lola Young secured the year’s second-biggest single with “Messy.” These successes, alongside hits from Skye Newman and Sienna Spiro, signaled a landmark year for women, who accounted for eight of the top ten year-end tracks.

This domestic success translated rapidly into global influence. Olivia Dean and Lola Young both earned Grammy nominations for Best New Artist, while rock sensations Sleep Token achieved the rare feat of a simultaneous No. 1 album in both the UK and US.

Rock Revivals and Regional Success

It was a standout year for guitar music. Oasis’s blockbuster reunion sparked a massive catalog resurgence, with over one million album sales in 2025 alone. Sam Fender further cemented his status by delivering the year’s fastest-selling album by a British artist, People Watching, following his Mercury Prize win.

The year also highlighted the UK’s geographic diversity. Artists from nine of the UK’s twelve nations and regions topped the Official Albums Chart, proving that the nation’s musical powerhouse extends far beyond London.

Vinyl’s Unstoppable Momentum

Physical formats enjoyed their second year of consecutive growth, propelled by an 18th year of rising vinyl sales. Vinyl LPs grew by 13.3%, with Taylor Swift’s The Life Of A Showgirl leading the charge as the top-selling title.

BPI CEO Dr. Jo Twist OBE praised the industry’s resilience but issued a call to action: “British music is a global headline act. Ensuring its success should be high on the Government’s agenda to protect the labels that discover and nurture the global stars of tomorrow.”
