The singer’s divorce from Sam Asghari, ending their 14-month marriage, was finalized in May, with the waiting period ending just in time for her 43rd birthday
The six-month waiting period required after Britney Spears and Sam Asghari finalized their divorce has ended. The former couple’s divorce proceedings began in August 2023, and the pair reached a settlement in May 2024 to end their 14-month marriage. Now, Spears has officially been declared single.
The declaration comes as Spears celebrates her 43rd birthday. She hasn’t yet publicly commented on either occasion, but the singer has recently been championing her own freedom in her signature Instagram dance videos. “The day I married myself,” she captioned one post, in which she twirled around in a wedding dress. “Bringing it back because it might seem embarrassing or stupid, but I think it’s the most brilliant thing I’ve ever done.”
Asghari initiated the divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” at the time. He announced the split on Instagram, writing: “After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. Shit happens. Asking for privacy seems rediculous [sic] so I will just ask for everyone including the media to be kind and thoughtful.”
Spears commented on the divorce a few days later. “As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together … 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that.”
Spears and Asghari began dating shortly after filming the singer’s “Slumber Party” music video in 2016 and got engaged in September 2022. After Spears was freed from her conservatorship, the pair had what she called a “dream” wedding ceremony that brought in a star-studded crowd of guests.
Spears has now been married three times, divorced twice, and has had one marriage annulled. Her first marriage to childhood boyfriend Jason Alexander — who tried to crash her wedding with Asghari — was annulled after 55 hours in 2004. That same year, she married Kevin Federline, with whom she shares two sons. They later divorced after three years of marriage.
