California governor Gavin Newsom spotted at Green Day’s pre-Super Bowl show as he haunts Kid Rock over being “banned”

California governor Gavin Newsom spotted at Green Day’s pre-Super Bowl show as he haunts Kid Rock over being “banned”

California governor Gavin Newsom was at Green Day’s Super Bowl warm-up show this week and is now taunting Kid Rock ahead of the big game.

The potential future Democrat presidential candidate is set to welcome the Super Bowl to his home state tonight (February 8), when the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Headlining the opening ceremony will be Green Day, and on Friday night (February 6), the band played an intimate show at San Francisco’s Pier 29, which saw them call out any ICE agents in attendance, deploring them to “quit their shitty ass job”.

In footage that has since been shared on social media, it has been revealed that Newsom himself was at the show – check out the video below.

This year’s Super Bowl has been at the centre of controversy ever since Bad Bunny was announced as the halftime show headliner in September. The Puerto Rican superstar has come under personal attack from the MAGA movement, with Donald Trump calling the decision “crazy” and claiming that he had “never heard of” the rapper.

ICE have also indicated that they will be present in the stadium during the performance, but that has not stopped Newsom from speaking out this weekend to declare Sunday as ‘Bad Bunny Day’ to celebrate the occasion.

In a post on X that mocked Trump’s trademark all caps self-aggrandisement, Newsom wrote: “AS MANY PEOPLE KNOW, I AM A TREMENDOUS LOVER OF “THE SPANISH.” IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LANGUAGE SPOKEN BY MANY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE IN THE GREAT STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND ACROSS THE WORLD.”

“I AM ALSO A HUGE FAN OF PUERRRRRRRTO RICO. THAT IS WHY I AM DECLARING TOMORROW IN CALIFORNIA AS “BAD BUNNY DAY” WHEN BAD BUNNY PERFORMS AT THE BIG GAME IN THE GOLDEN STATE WITH HIS SOOTHING, BEAUTIFUL VOICE, AND HIS VERY NICE LOOKS.”

Newsom concluded: “WE LOVE BAD BUNNY! HE IS NEARLY AS “HOT” AS ME, WHICH IS A BIG COMPLIMENT, BECAUSE THERE IS NOBODY “HOTTER.” HAPPY BAD BUNNY DAY, AMERICA. ENJOY!!!”

In a separate post, Newsom turned his attention to Kid Rock, who is headlining Turning Point USA’s ‘All-Star American Halftime Show’ directly opposite Bad Bunny, which many in the MAGA movement have vowed to watch instead of the official show.

KID ROCK IS BANNED FROM CALIFORNIA. AND NOW HE IS BEING BANNED IN MORE PLACES. TERRIBLE MUSIC. WHY IS HE SO ANGRY? https://t.co/AZWkwXb2w2

— Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) February 7, 2026

Referencing this week’s news that one leg of the musician’s ‘Rock The Country’ festival has been cancelled, Newsom declared that Kid Rock was “banned” from California and was now being “banned in more places”, adding: “TERRIBLE MUSIC. WHY IS HE SO ANGRY?”

Kid Rock is a longtime advocate for Trump, dating back to 2016, and he played at his second inauguration in January 2025.

As well as Bad Bunny’s halftime show and Green Day’s opening ceremony, the Super Bowl will also see Charlie Puth sing the national anthem and Brandi Carlile perform ‘America The Beautiful’.

Bad Bunny has promised that “the world will dance” during his halftime show, while NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has defended his selection as being “carefully thought through”.
