Chappell Roan recalls reaction to hearing her music on radio for first time

Chappell Roan has recalled her reaction to hearing her music on the radio for the first time.

The Pink Pony Club singer has been dropping music consistently since 2020 but she didn’t find mainstream success until she released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, in 2023 and the single Good Luck, Babe! in spring 2024.

During an interview with W Magazine, Chappell recalled her reaction when she heard herself on the airwaves for the first time.

“I think it was in an Uber when I was on tour. I heard Good Luck, Babe. I grabbed my friend’s hand and I was like, ‘Oh my f**king….’ But I didn’t scream. I don’t sing along with myself,” she recalled.

While that moment marked a big milestone, Chappell, real name Kayleigh Amstutz, noted that she generally dislikes listening to her own music once it’s been released to the public.

“I never listen to my own music. If it’s out, I don’t want to hear it. I’ve heard it hundreds and hundreds of times,” she explained.

The 27-year-old’s comments come shortly after she admitted that Good Luck, Babe! was hard to sing and she felt bad for those who try to cover it.

“B**ch, I can’t even sing it. I cannot sing in the original key in a set of songs. If I’m just doing it (on its own), maybe,” she confessed on the Las Culturistas podcast. “When people sing my songs, I’m just like, I feel bad. I know how hard (it is). I’m like, good luck, I don’t even care if you f**king mess up. Thank you for trying, because I can’t even nail it.”

Chappell released The Giver, her first song since her stratospheric rise to fame, in March.
