Charli XCX’s team have responded to the claim that the singer used parts of Sky Ferreira’s old songs on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack.

Ferreira hit headlines over the weekend when she replied to a social media user who claimed that the intro to Charli’s song Chains of Love was “ripped” from her 2018 demo Ancient Idols, and Altars was based on a Ferreira demo from 2015.

The singer-songwriter replied, “Your industry ‘insider’ is wrong. Close but wrong.”

However, in a follow-up comment, she added, “I’m not going to get into it but it was definitely more than an intro. I have proof of everything with dates. It isn’t worth the trouble bc I know how the world works.”

Responding to the allegations in a lengthy statement to Billboard, Charli’s team insisted that she “always shares credits fairly and appropriately, and values her collaborators tremendously” because her career began as a songwriter for other artists.

“Ahead of the Wuthering Heights album release, a standard review process was conducted on a small number of tracks from the album, including fragments of material originating from earlier sessions. This process involved managers, legal representatives, artists and producers, and included a thorough review of archival materials and demo recordings,” they explained.

“All relevant parties were consulted throughout, and the album was played in full in advance of release to everyone. Songwriting credits and splits were determined and agreed collectively in writing, with reference to documented timelines and contributions.

“All credits were finalized and formally approved by the appropriate parties prior to the album’s release.”

Ferreira is credited as a featured artist, co-writer and vocal producer on Eyes of the World, a track on the Wuthering Heights album, which Charli released in February to accompany Emerald Fennell’s film of the same name.

Charli has been a vocal supporter of Ferreira over the years, and they previously joined forces for their 2019 single Cross You Out.
