Cher has slammed her daughter-in-law, painting her as a fame seeker “on a quest for money”.
The singer filed court documents arguing against Marieangela King-Allman becoming guardian of Elijah Blue Allman.
Elijah, 50, is currently under a psychiatric hold at a New Hampshire psychiatric/correctional facility as he faces multiple criminal charges over two separate incidents – one in which he broke into a house, and another in which he created a “disturbance” in the dining hall of a local private prep school.
While Cher’s son and Marieangela are still technically married, Cher’s legal team argued they were long estranged and that her daughter-in-law was merely seeking fame and fortune.
“The New Hampshire State Hospital, and the rest of the family remain adamantly opposed to Mrs. King-Allman serving given her estrangement from Elijah,” court documents filed by Cher’s lawyer, Justin Gold, stated.
“As evidenced by the previously pending divorce, her refusal and failure to assist Elijah and Kayti Pease while he was struggling before he was arrested in New Hampshire, and/or because the family believes that she is inserting herself back into the picture on a quest for money and/or a bit of fame.”
Kayti Pease, also known as Kayti Edwards, is the mother of Elijah’s 15-year-old daughter, Ever – who only learned of her paternity in March this year after Elijah’s mental-health collapse.
“He wanted to see her and have a relationship with her, but he wasn’t in any fit state,” Kayti told The Sun in April. “She thought he was just a family friend at that point.”
“I had to shelter her from him and, when he gets better, he will appreciate that,” she added. “Cher is also very protective of Ever and the family dynamic and she knows Elijah’s state and wants to protect that from her, too. He needs to get back to being the guy I once knew, and Cher agrees. We need to get him better.”
In her recent court filing, Cher claimed Marieangela had done nothing to assist Elijah in the aftermath of his arrests and hospitalisation.
“Mr. Allman’s condition was not unknown to her, as Kayti Pease had repeatedly and often requested that Mrs. King-Allman assist her in providing care for Mr. Allman,” the filing said.
“Mrs. King-Allman never lifted a finger to help, despite the fact that Mr. Allman was supposedly her spouse. Now that a conservatorship is pending, Mrs. King-Allman clearly sees a financial opportunity to control his income, and she has attempted to seize the opportunity created by his incarceration to try to reinsert herself back into his life.”
