The country singer, who made a rare comment on the death on a recent podcast, had struck a 77-year-old woman with his truck in June

Country singer Conner Smith recently reflected on the grief he has felt since he was involved in an auto accident that left 77-year-old woman dead in June.

“It was so out of nowhere,” he said on The Upload with Brooke Taylor podcast. “Just in a moment, your entire … like a tornado runs through your house, and there’s so much grief and there’s so much trauma from that intense, intense trauma. … “There’s a darkness in that, you just can’t — there’s no words, right? It felt like a tornado just blowing through my house. You don’t have a concept of reality and what is going on, and all you have is the people you love, and the people that are around you.”

Smith was driving his Chevrolet Silverado truck when he struck Dorothy Dobbins at a Nashville crosswalk on June 8. Police claimed he failed to yield. EMTs brought her to a hospital where she later died.

Metropolitan Nashville Police Department issued Smith a misdemeanor state citation the following month. At the time, he issued a statement addressing Dobbins’ death. “Not a day has gone by that I haven’t grieved, prayed, and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family,” he wrote on Instagram. “My heart is broken in a way I’ve never experienced, and I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all.”

Smith told Taylor that after the accident, he turned off his phone for a month “because it was so traumatic” as he processed the tragedy. He said he “locked [myself]” at his parents’ house where he and his wife stayed.

The country singer, who released his debut album Smoky Mountains last year, performed his first concert since the accident at the Grand Ole Opry on July 31. He told Taylor he felt grateful for the music industry to receive him again. He currently has no concerts scheduled.
