Courtney Barnett joined Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 to discuss her new track ’Stay In Your Lane’ and making her new album..

Courtney Barnett on her new track ‘Stay in Your Lane’…
Yeah, I think it’s fun. that song especially, it kind of it came towards the end of this writing process, so it was a bit of a bit of a surprise and I noticed sometimes in the studio, you kind of write softer, quieter songs or they have like a more laid-back energy and then as soon as you play something live, it kind of gets faster, gets louder, so yeah, never know. I was actually trying to finish the lyrics to a bunch of other songs and I got and and this was kind of like a procrastination song. So it wasn’t meant to exist. Um, but it was good. It was a good songwriting exercise that turned into the first single.

Courtney Barnett on making a new album…
You know, I kind of been making this album over the last couple of years at kind of different moments. so it’s been really nice to finally get to play some of the songs live. And yeah, we’ve been doing a handful of shows over the last couple of months and just adding a few more new songs each time. Uh, and it’s always fun to finally after all of that time making something, finally get to show people.

It’s definitely a more kind of upbeat out, like I feel like Things Take Time was um, like it not as uh, energetic or something and it probably reflects, where I was in my laundry room writing the majority of the songs on the couch. So this album I feel like definitely has a bigger more guitars and um, more volume.

Courtney Barnett on her last album ‘Things Take Time’…
That album um, it was written, during COVID and um, lockdowns and um, multiple Melbourne lockdowns. I spent probably the most time I’ve spent by myself in, well, probably forever. Because I was living in a flat by myself and working on music and um, and so yeah, it was quite a kind of internal and um, reflective kind of, kind of album and yeah, definitely, you know, at that point, there was times where it was kind of like, are we ever gonna tour again? What’s happening with the world? And um, but yeah, this (new) album, it’s definitely different to that. Um, it’s a different, different environment.
