Doja Cat has backtracked after publicly criticising Timothée Chalamet over remarks he made about ballet and opera.

Earlier this week, the Say So hitmaker took aim at the Marty Supreme actor after he suggested in an interview that the general public no longer cares about the classical art forms.

In a now-deleted TikTok video, Doja directly called out Chalamet and insisted ballet and opera remain thriving cultural institutions.

“Opera is 400 years old. Ballet is 500 years old,” she said in the video. “Somebody named Timothée Chalamet – big guy, by the way – had the nerve to say on camera that nobody cares about it.”

However, the Paint The Town Red singer has now admitted she knows “nothing” about the subject and has never been to the opera or ballet.

Doja, 30, explained that she initially weighed in on the controversy because she knew it would drive engagement on social media.

“I took it upon myself yesterday to kind of ‘give it to the man’ because there is a culture based around outrage,” she shared. “What I was doing yesterday was virtue signalling because I wanted to connect and I knew that Timothée’s goof-up was something that I could leverage in order for people to connect with me and f**k with me. And it’s easy.”

“It’s a modern way to garner clicks, likes, approval, and all kinds of things like that from people,” she continued. “And so I did that yesterday, and I didn’t really think about why I was doing it.”

She concluded the video by admitting that she wanted to “look like a hero”, but after “educating” herself, she felt compelled to address the situation.

Chalamet’s original comments came during a conversation with Matthew McConaughey for Variety and CNN about preserving the cinema experience.

“I admire people (saying), ‘Hey, we gotta keep movie theatres alive. We gotta keep this genre alive,'” he stated at the time. “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.'”

The Dune star added, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there… Damn, I just took shots for no reason.”
