Duffy to share “honest and courageous story” of life and kidnap ordeal in new Disney+ documentary

Duffy is sharing her life story in a new feature-length Disney+ documentary. Find all the details below.

Announced today (Wednesday March 25), the Hulu Original documentary will follow Duffy’s life from her upbringing in Wales to her rise to fame, as well as her withdrawal from the public eye following her kidnapping ordeal.

It will include interviews with family, friends, and “close peers” in the music industry, per a press release, and is directed by Gill Callan.

Sean Doyle, Disney+’s Unscripted Vice President, said of the announcement: “15 years ago, Duffy was one of the most famous singers in the world. Her voice was distinctly recognisable and powerful.

“And then she disappeared,” he continued. “This film will give Duffy the chance to tell her story in her own words.

“We set out in a search for impactful, female-led stories in collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen, and it’s a privilege that Duffy’s is the first we’re able to help tell. But above all, I’m especially in awe of Duffy – for her honesty and courage to share her story.”

Callan added: “Duffy’s life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self. I’m drawn to the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story and how a person can be deeply affected by their experiences, yet still find a powerful, expressive voice that is unmistakably hers.”

Duffy – real name Aimée Anne Duffy – opened up on her decade-long absence from music back in 2020, saying that she had been kidnapped and held hostage for a number of days, a period during which she was drugged and raped.

Shortly afterwards, she called rape a “weapon of war” in a painful account of her experience shared on her website. She then went on to encourage fans to speak out about their personal struggles, adding that she felt “liberated” after sharing her story.

Duffy also hit out at Netflix that same year, calling them “irresponsible” for “glamourising the brutal reality of sex trafficking, kidnapping and rape” in the film 365 Days.

After signing a record deal in 2007, Duffy’s 2008 debut album ‘Rockferry’ became the best-selling record in the UK that year. She released her second album, ‘Endlessly’, in 2010 before disappearing from public life.

In 2020, she released her single ‘Something Beautiful‘ and shortly followed that up with her track ‘River In The Sky‘.

Last year, she teased her return to music with a UK Garage remix of her hit ‘Mercy’.
