Note: This article contains references to sexual assault that readers may find disturbing.

Duffy, the Welsh singer who was abducted, held captive for weeks, and raped, leading to her retreat from the public eye, will give her account of the harrowing ordeal in a new Hulu Original documentary for Disney+. Six years after opening up about the experience in a pair of notes published in 2020, she has partnered with production company Rare TV to tell her story on-camera for the first time. No title or air date have been set.

The documentary’s director, Gill Callan, said in a press release, “Duffy’s life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self. I’m drawn to the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story and how a person can be deeply affected by their experiences, yet still find a powerful, expressive voice that is unmistakably hers.”

The film will provide a retrospective of Duffy’s life, from her Welsh upbringing to her arrival on the world stage with 2008 album Rockferry and its hit singles “Mercy” and “Warwick Avenue.” After posting the story of her kidnapping, she shared her first new songs in half a decade, “River in the Sky” and “Something Beautiful,” in mid 2020. As well as interviews with Duffy, the doc will feature archival footage and interviews with family, friends, and her peers in the music industry.
