Editors frontman Tom Smith opens up on imposter syndrome and dream Pyramid Stage return

Speaking with Radio X’s Dan O’Connell at On the Beach Brighton, Editors frontman Tom Smith opened up about his evolving relationship with live performance, reflecting on his early struggles with anxiety alongside his hopes for the future.

Addressing how his mindset has shifted over the band’s two-decade career, Smith revealed that performing did not always come naturally to him. “It’s a two-sided coin being in a band,” Smith explained. “You have the creative kind of studio side of things and then performing. And over the years, my relationship with that started from a very kind of anxious place. I kind of was imposter syndrome for a few records.”

However, time on stage has allowed the singer to find confidence in his role as a frontman. “As you get older, you kind of relax and get a bit more comfortable in your own skin,” he shared. “And the idea of being a performer kind of becomes a little bit more interesting.”

When asked about his ultimate dream venue to play, Smith pointed back to one of the UK’s most iconic festival settings. “It would be cool to be back on the Pyramid Stage,” he said, recalling their previous appearance. “That was amazing!”
The conversation also touched on musical exploration and potential side projects. Reflecting on the band’s willingness to evolve, Smith noted, “The band have been quite chameleon-like over their twenty-two years. You know, we’ve made a few different sounding records, and the focus has shifted musically. And we’ve always enjoyed that. It’s why I’m still here and why we’re still here. It keeps us all going.”

When asked about potentially making another festive album following his past collaboration with Razorlight’s former drummer Andy Burrows, Smith teased a possible reunion. “I might do actually. Yeah. I’m not sure if Editors could pull that off, but you never know,” Smith said. “The Christmas record with Andy was a stretch. But other than that, I’d love working with Andy and I’d love to work with him again.”
