Eldest The Osmonds sibling Alan Osmond dies, aged 76: “A deeply loving soul whose life blessed many”

Alan Osmond, who achieved fame singing with his brothers in The Osmonds, has died at the age of 76.

The musician died on Monday (April 20) surrounded by his wife, Suzanne, and their eight sons, per a family statement issued to Utah broadcaster KSL-TV. He had been living with multiple sclerosis since 1987.

Alan began his career in 1958 when he formed a barbershop quartet with his brothers Wayne, Merrill and Jay in their hometown of Ogden, Utah. Later, their younger siblings, Donny and Jimmy, would join the act.

The group were discovered by Jay Emerson Williams, father of Andy Williams, at a performance at Disneyland in 1961, and the following year they became regular performers on The Andy Williams Show.

They received great commercial success in the 1970s, selling over 77 million records worldwide with hit singles ‘Crazy Horses’, ‘Love Me For A Reason’ and ‘Let Me In’. Throughout their career, they scored five UK top 10 singles and four UK top 10 albums.

Alan’s brother, Merrill Osmond, is among those paying tribute. He said in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of my beloved brother, Alan Osmond. I was grateful to be with him shortly before he passed and to share a final meaningful moment together. Alan was a gifted creator, a man of faith, and a deeply loving soul whose life blessed many,” per People.

“Our family is thankful for the outpouring of love and prayers. We will honor his memory and the message he cared so deeply about. He will be missed beyond words,” Merrill added.

Donny has also shared a tribute alongside one of the “earliest” photos of them together. “Even back then, you can see that he had his arm around me, watching over me. That’s who he was. My protector. My guide. The one who quietly carried so much responsibility so the rest of us could shine,” he wrote.

“Alan was our leader in every sense of the word. His tireless work helped build everything we became. I will always be grateful for the sacrifices he made and the love he showed—not just to me, but to every member of our family,” he continued.

This is one of the earliest pictures I have of my brother Alan and me.

The family continued performing together until their 50th anniversary in 2007, when Alan and his younger brother Wayne retired due to health issues. Wayne died in January 2025 aged 73.

In 2024, Alan published his memoir, One Way Ticket, about his life in music and his experience of living with multiple sclerosis.
