The Flaming Lips have been forced to cancel a show after they shared news that frontman Wayne Coyne had been hospitalised with pneumonia.

The band were due to play in Vienna last night (June 15) as part of their ongoing European tour, but were forced to cancel when Coyne became ill.

Sharing a new post on Instagram, the band wrote: “We are truly sorry, Vienna, but our show tonight at Gasometer is cancelled.

“Wayne has pneumonia and has been ordered to bed rest. All refunds will be available from your point of purchase. We hope to see you again, Austria!”

The Grammy-winning psychedelic rock band are due to continue the road to the UK this summer, following their run of shows in North America and Europe.

The band still have several European dates left in Italy, Prague, Serbia, Croatia and Greece. As yet, there has been no announcement on whether these shows will be affected.

Their UK and Ireland leg will kick off with a performance at the Heineken Big Top in Galway, Ireland, on July 16. Support at this Irish-exclusive gig comes from special guests Mercury Rev.

From there, The Flaming Lips will head to The Piece Hall in Halifax (July 23) with The Beta Band and Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand (27). They’ll also make appearances at Latitude 2026 in Suffolk and Nottingham’s Splendour Festival. You can buy your tickets for the shows here.

The Flaming Lips’ 2026 UK and Ireland tour dates are:

JULY
16 – Heineken Big Top, Galway
18 – Dreamland, Margate (new date)
19 – Splendour Festival, Nottingham

21 – Civic Hall, Wolverhampton (new date)
23 – The Piece Hall, Halifax
26 – Latitude Festival, Southwold

27 – Kelvingrove Bandstand, Glasgow
29 – Depot, Cardiff (new date)

The Flaming Lips released their 16th and latest studio album,‘American Head’, in 2020.

Earlier this year, Steven Drozd shed light on his exit from the band, saying he had hoped to stay a part of the line-up after “stepping back” from touring.

“Wayne [Coyne, frontman] and I disagreed on what I should do moving forward, so we just kind of agreed that I would step back,” the musician explained. “Then, stepping back turned into not coming back.”

Drozd had announced his departure at the end of last year, saying: “They’re done with me – but we’re not talking about it. So yes I’m moving on.”

Drummer Matthew Duckworth Kirksey has also addressed Drozd’s departure, talking up the current incarnation of The Flaming Lips. “There is new music on the way and I think it’s the best thing we’ve done in ages,” he said.
