Reflecting on her breakout run on The X Factor in 2014 and her subsequent music career, East described her working relationship with record executive Simon Cowell as a collaborative creative partnership.
“Simon was like a collaborator, like a mentor, but we would discuss things,” East explained during the podcast interview. “He would sit me down and go, ‘What do you want to do for this? How do you see this working?’ He was very aware of what I’d done before. It was very much a partnership. I loved working with him because he was actually willing to hear me out. I remember being in the final at Wembley and having the creative idea for my performance, and he let me direct it all.”
East also discussed how her background as a touring musician and solo artist enhances her current broadcast career on Hits Radio when interviewing fellow recording artists, noting that shared industry experience helps remove barriers during conversations.
Additionally, the presenter recalled facing frustration prior to her 2014 television breakthrough after previous record deals failed to materialize, as well as balancing her family life with taking on major acting roles, including her casting in the West End production of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical. East credited her husband for providing emotional backing and career advice during pivotal career transitions.
