Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl still can’t ‘make sense’ of Taylor Hawkins’s death

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl is still grappling with Taylor Hawkins’s death nearly four years on.

The drummer died while on tour in Bogotá, Colombia at the age of 50 on 25 March 2022.

Reflecting on Taylor’s untimely passing in an interview for Mojo magazine published this week, Dave emphasised that he and his bandmates continue to grieve the loss.

“Losing Taylor was never meant to be,” he said. “That threw our world upside down and made me question everything about life, that it was so unfair. I still have a hard time making sense of it.”

But after taking a break, Dave noted that he and the other members of the Foo Fighters felt the need to make music again, which culminated in the rock group’s twelfth studio album, Your Favorite Toy.

“Because it had saved us once before,” the 57-year-old continued, referring to the Foo Fighters’ 1995 debut studio album, which Dave recorded following the death of his Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain, the previous year.

Ilan Rubin, former touring drummer of Nine Inch Nails, is the current drummer for the Foo Fighters, following the departure of Josh Freese in 2025.

And speaking about the upcoming project, bassist Nate Mendel insisted fans should expect to hear a different sound from the group.

“That was the design going in,” he added. “Dave referencing the hardcore records from the ’80s that we grew up with – blown out, loose and rough.”

Your Favorite Toy is due to drop in April.
