Foo Fighters to step in as support act for AC/DC for “one night only”: “This is literally a dream come true. So if you want blood, you’ve got it”

Foo Fighters have been announced to step in to support AC/DC for “one night only” – with frontman Dave Grohl describing the opportunity as “literally a dream come true”.

The show is set to take place on September 8 when AC/DC head to St. Louis as part of their ‘Power Up’ world tour. For all of the previous shows – including the 2025 UK and European shows – the rock icons have been supported by The Pretty Reckless.

Now, it has been confirmed that The Pretty Reckless will not be able to play for the Missouri gig and Foo Fighters have been enlisted to take on the slot instead.

The last-minute announcement marks a rare support slot for Dave Grohl and co., and comes as the rock giants are currently out on a stadium tour of their own celebrating latest album ‘Your Favorite Toy’.

“Foo Fighters are taking a special one-off detour from their ‘Take Cover’ global stadium tour to fill in for their friends The Pretty Reckless as special guests of AC/DC for one night only in St. Louis,” read a new announcement on AC/DC’s social media channels.

“The performance brings two generations of rocks’ biggest live acts together for a one-night-only event, with the Foo Fighters opening for the band’s St. Louis tour stop.”

In their own post, Foo Fighters shared the news with fans, and Grohl explained how being asked to join Brian Johnson and co. on their tour is a “dream come true” for him as he was inspired by the band after watching their 1980 concert film Let There Be Rock as a child.

Describing it as the moment that “that truly introduced me to the raw, primal power of rock and roll performance for the first time”, Grohl shared that seeing the movie when he was 11-years-old left him “watching from the edge of my seat the entire time”.

“It was like nothing I had ever experienced before,” he wrote. “How could five human beings conjure and possess such intensity on stage with just their instruments, and do so with such swagger, such groove… and such danger? My mind was blown. Melted. Changed forever. And my heart felt like it might explode with passion and inspiration.”

He continued: “From that night on, the bar was set exceptionally high. If you were a drummer and you didn’t have to change your snare drum between songs from pummeling it to splinters, you weren’t hitting it hard enough… If you were a frontman in a band and you weren’t drenched in sweat by the end of the show, you weren’t giving the audience what they deserve.”

The inspiration he felt from the show, he added, made him “approach my life in music from a different perspective” and is the reason why you’ll see him “run from side to side of a stage drenched in sweat after hours of hammering my guitar to pieces” when he plays live.

“All I have ever wanted was to someday live up to the awe inspiring fury of AC/DC, live on stage (an impossible task, by the way),” he wrapped up. “And now, for the first time since that fateful night in 1980, my band Foo Fighters will share a stage with the gentlemen who are single handedly responsible for my determination to give every audience everything I have, every night.

“This is literally a dream come true. So, if you want blood… you’ve got it. Let there be fucking rock, St Louis.”

The two bands have never toured together before, although Foo Fighters did bring out AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson as a special guest in 2021 when they headlined the VAX LIVE charity gig. That show raised funds to help support vaccination efforts against COVID-19, and saw Johnson join the band for a live rendition of ‘Back In Black’.

Foo Fighters’ own North American headline shows see them joined by Queens Of The Stone Age, and shows continue in Los Angeles on Saturday (August 22), followed by a festival slot at Rock In Rio on September 4.

After they support AC/DC, they will continue their ‘Take Cover’ tour in North Dakota, California, Kentucky, Nevada and more throughout September and October, before kicking off an Australian leg of tour dates at the end of the year. Visit here for tickets.

The dates follow on from their recent European run that included two nights at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool. NME was at one of those gigs and gave the band a glowing four-star review which read: “The laid-back rock club vibe is what makes this work. Foos don’t have the bells, whistles, pyro, or blockbuster special effects of other standard stadium acts, just tunes and banter.”

As for AC/DC, their ‘Power Up’ tour continues next weekend with a show in Atlanta on August 27, followed by more dates in Texas, Indiana, New Jersey and more. All dates barring the St. Louis gig will see them supported by The Pretty Reckless. Visit here for tickets.
