A fundraiser has been launched for a permanent mural in tribute to Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield.

The Stone Roses icon, who was also a member of Primal Scream from 1996 to 2011, died in November 2025 from respiratory issues aged 63, and he was laid to rest the next month at Manchester Cathedral with fellow Manchester legends like Liam Gallagher and Ian Brown in attendance.

Now, GRIT Studios has launched a campaign to instal a large painting of Mani in the suburb of Failsworth, where he grew up.

As well as the mural, the project will also look to raise funds for Maggie’s Centre, which is a cancer support charity based in the city.

The organisation supported Mani and his wife Imelda while she was undergoing treatment for the disease.

The Crowdfunder page reads: “Inspired by Ian Brown’s eulogy to Mani at Manchester Cathedral, a major community crowdfunder is being launched to create a large-scale mural honouring the beloved bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream and to raise funds for the Maggie’s Manchester.

“The mural, which will be created in Failsworth, where young Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield grew up, has been initiated by the team at GRIT Studios following an overwhelming outpouring of love from fans across Greater Manchester and beyond.

“Mani’s brother, Greg Mounfield, is supporting this campaign and has facilitated a prominent large wall space for the mural and chosen the design.

“It will be painted by the renowned artist Pic.One.Art, whose recent portrait of Noel and Liam Gallagher outside the iconic Sifters Records in Burnage became an instant landmark and received widespread attention.”

So far, £6,001 of the £10,000 has been raised – bolstered by an anonymous £,500 donation on Monday (16.02.26) – and GRIT Studios is hoping to honour the music icon with the special tribute.

They continued: “Since Mani passed away in November, countless fans have expressed a desire to see a tribute in the place that shaped him in North Manchester.

“GRIT Studios, the not-for-profit art studios organisation, has stepped forward to organise a community-led, crowdfunded project that celebrates Mani’s life, music and spirit.

“It will not only fund the creation of the mural but all profits will go to Maggie’s Manchester, which was close to Mani and his wife Imelda’s hearts during her cancer treatment and for whom they fundraised.”

Mani’s funeral took place in Manchester on December 6, 2025, drawing an outpouring of grief and affection from across the music world and beyond.

Among those who attended to pay their respects were Mani’s Stone Roses bandmates Ian Brown, John Squire and Alan ‘Reni’ Wren, as well as Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, former Manchester United players David Beckham and Gary Neville, plus Paul Weller, Bez, and Mani’s Primal Scream bandmate Bobby Gillespie.
