Garbage and Primal Scream lead tributes to “Scottish fashion queen” Pam Hogg: “The world has lost a bona fide original”

Legendary fashion designer Pam Hogg has died, with Garbage, Primal Scream and many more paying tribute.

The Scottish designer died aged 66 “surrounded by the loving care of cherished friends and family”. No cause of death has been given so far.

Tributes have poured in for Hogg, with Garbage praising her as “our revered Scottish fashion queen”. “The Iconoclastic and fantastic Dr Hogg may have left the runway but you will be found in the long and storied history of British fashion and in the imaginative, pioneering work of each and every young fashion designer who now dares to trail in your wake,” the band wrote on Instagram.

“The world has lost a bone fide original. A one of one. A jewel of a human being. You will be so missed dear Pam.”

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth added he was “missing you already Pam Hogg”, while Primal Scream simply wrote: “P-A-M ⚡️F-O-R-E-V-E-R”. Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran also took to social media to share his memories of Hogg, writing: “It was my great privilege to have known Pam for several decades as a dear friend. She was a fiercely creative designer who carved out her own unique identity. Mostly operating outside of the fashion system, she made extraordinary collections with minimal budgets, regularly hand-sewing many of the outfits herself.

“There is a new star in the dark sky tonight, it will be the one that shines the brightest.”

Pam Hogg rose to prominence in the 1980s, and became known for her punk-inspired clubwear and graphic, tight-fitting jumpsuits worn by the likes of Kylie Minogue. Hogg has designed for music legends like Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry, Rihanna, Björk and Grace Jones.

Hogg has designed for other high-profile names such as Naomi Campbell, Princess Diana and Princess Eugenie. In 2011, Kate Moss wore a black Hogg leather dress to the NME Awards the same night Alison Mosshart won the Hottest Woman award sporting a Hogg fur coat.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, Hogg began making clothes aged six and would go on to study painting and printed textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. Hogg then moved to London, studying at the Royal College of Art, fashioning outlandish looks to impress the notoriously bold dress codes for Steve Strange’s Blitz Club.

Eventually, her designs transitioned from club to catwalk in 1981, with i-D hailing her as “the most consistently inventive British fashion designer (alongside Vivienne Westwood)” by 1989.

Hogg also participated in many bands herself; her first band Rubbish regularly supported The Pogues in the 1970s, and her band Doll who would open for the likes of Blondie and the Raincoats during the 1990s.
