Ghetts charged with death by dangerous driving over alleged hit-and-run

Rapper and actor Ghetts has been charged with death by dangerous driving over an alleged hit-and-run.

The Supacell actor, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, appeared in Barkingside Magistrates’ Court in Essex, England on Monday.

The court heard that the 41-year-old allegedly failed to stop after his car hit 20-year-old student Yubin Tamang on Redbridge Lane in the north-east London neighbourhood of Ilford on Saturday 18 October.

Ghetts was originally charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but the prosecution upgraded the charge to death by dangerous driving after Tamang died on 20 October.

According to The Standard, prosecutor Varinder Hayre described Tamang as an only child who had been sent to the U.K. to receive an education.

Hayre also said that the black BMW, which was registered and insured in the grime MC’s name, was significantly damaged. Police officers attended his address early on 19 October.

Ghetts first appeared in court on 20 October and was remanded in custody.

During Monday’s hearing, the rapper spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address while dressed in a grey prison-issue tracksuit.

He was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance at London’s Old Bailey on 24 November.

Ghetts, who played Glastonbury last year, has released five albums and collaborated with high-profile artists including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Skepta throughout his career.

Last year, he was nominated for the Mercury Prize for his album, On Purpose, with Purpose, and had a supporting role in the Netflix superhero series Supacell.
