Green Day’s coming-of-age movie has been renamed

The forthcoming coming-of-age movie inspired by Green Day has a new title, drawing on a name from the band’s past.

The film was previously called New Year’s Rev, and follows the adventures of three high school friends who set off on a road trip after mistakenly being led to believe their band has been booked to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The story is inspired by the band’s own adventures on the road, around the time of their 1994 album ‘Dookie’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will now be called Nimrods, a title inspired by their 1997 album ‘Nimrod’. The film stars How To Train Your Dragon actor Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, and Fred Armison. The band themselves will serve as producers and appear in the film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, with a release date yet to be announced.

Green Day made headlines earlier this year when they played the Super Bowl opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on February 8. Billie Joe Armstrong and co. performed a medley of classic songs from their back catalogue, including the politically charged ‘American Idiot’. Armstrong did not, however, sing the tweaked line “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” as he has done at recent shows.

The trio’s reluctance to make any political statement was a surprise to many, with some taking to social media to express their disappointment at the perceived missed opportunity. “Green Day skipping a whole verse of ‘American Idiot’ and about 80% of the words to ‘Holiday’ — which is probably their most political song ever — is absolutely disappointing” said one fan on X (formerly Twitter). “Shameful. I’m angry. Green Day literally sold out to the media.”
