Halsey: ‘I’m not allowed to make a new album’

Halsey has claimed she’s “not allowed” to make a new album.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that aired on Thursday, the singer-songwriter revealed her frustrations over not releasing fresh material.

Halsey told Lowe: “I can’t make an album right, no. I’m not allowed to. It’s the reality.”

The 30-year-old star went on to give her opinion on the reasons behind the decision.

She claimed record bosses weren’t impressed with record sales for her 2024 album The Great Impersonator, as she claimed the release “didn’t perform the way they wanted it to.”

However, Halsey insisted her fifth studio album, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, performed well enough to warrant confidence in her as a solo artist.

“If I’m being honest with you, the album sold 100,000 f***ing copies first week,” she told Lowe. “That’s a pretty big first week, especially for an artist who hasn’t had a hit in a long time.”

Haley then claimed bosses had expected The Great Impersonator to replicate the success of 2020 release Manic, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 6x platinum in the U.S.

“It would be considered a success for most artists, 100,000 albums in the first week, in an era when we don’t sell physical music,” she shared. “But it’s a failure in the context of the kind of success I’ve had previously. And that’s the hardest part of having been a pop star once, because I’m not one anymore, and I’m being compared to people that I don’t consider lateral to me.”
