Hilary Duff has admitted she didn’t “feel good” about the dance memes inspired by her hit song With Love.
The singer and actress has addressed the viral clips stemming from her 2007 performance of the track, which resurfaced online years later and became a popular meme.
Speaking to Glamour in a new interview, Hilary explained that while fans were amused by footage of her performing the song on The Tonight Show in 2007, when she was just 19, she viewed the moment very differently.
“That has not been a fun thing to follow me around,” she said of the memes. “(I) didn’t want to be there, doing this dance that I probably didn’t want to be doing, and didn’t feel good at the time.”
The Lizzy McGuire star added, “I know people don’t look at it like that, and it’s this funny thing, but that’s how I used to look at it.”
Although she was initially uncomfortable with the memes, Hilary later embraced the moment, recreating the dance in a TikTok video in 2021. She also brought out the famous moves during her first concert in 10 years in London last month.
Elsewhere in the interview, Hilary, 38, reflected on how she was perceived earlier in her career.
“I’ll say that I didn’t ever feel ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ and it was funny that I was flagged as the good girl because of what people saw me doing on TV or that I wasn’t overtly sexual,” she told the publication. “I was a totally normal teenager doing normal teenager things.”
Her comments come just days after she announced her first world tour in almost two decades.
Hilary made her music comeback in November with Mature, her first single from her sixth studio album, Luck… or Something, which will be released on Friday.
