Hilary Duff inspired by Taylor Swift to re-record early music

Hilary Duff inspired by Taylor Swift to re-record early music

Hilary Duff has credited Taylor Swift with inspiring her to re-record some of her early music.

During an interview for the Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce podcast this week, the singer-actress opened up about her decision to perform new versions of tracks such as 2003’s Come Clean and 2005’s Wake Up for a special edition of her new album, Luck… or Something.

“Well, I got to be honest with you. The whole Taylor of it all really set the bar for being like, ‘No, here’s how we’re going to do this. Here’s how this is going to go.’ I actually called my versions ‘Mine,'” she told host Kylie, who is Taylor’s future sister-in-law. “And then, I think the other reason was, I recorded those songs when I was like 14 years old. I had not a clue what I was doing. I had no technique… the Internet loves to remind me of this.”

Following a dispute with talent manager Scooter Braun and Big Machine Records over masters in 2019, Taylor re-recorded four of her first six albums.

In May 2025, the Opalite hitmaker announced she had reclaimed her masters and full ownership of her music catalogue.

And Hilary explained that her decision to update some songs allowed her to display her evolution as an artist.

“I am such a different person now. If I’m going to sing these songs, I want it to feel and sound like me. I still very much sound like young… it was so funny too, to go back and like really try to get some of those sounds,” the 38-year-old continued. “I felt so bad. Brian (Phillips), my producer, was like, ‘I’ve really been trying to figure this one out.’ Like the times were so different that the interesting use of percussion… it was just very not what it is today.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Hilary listed Weather for Tennis and Adult Size Medium as some of her favourite tracks from Luck… or Something.

“It was so fun to create and just kind of like pour a whole bunch of my personality that people haven’t, you know, seen in a long time into it,” she added.

Hilary is set to kick off her The Lucky Me Tour on 22 June.
