“I wait until it comes and finds me”: Paul Weller on the future of new music

On Friday night, Paul Weller and Mick Talbot joined X-Posure with John Kennedy on Radio X.

Paul Weller and Mick Talbot joined Radio X’s John Kennedy on Friday evening, where Paul revealed that he is ‘not in a rush’ to release new music if at all, admitting that ‘what will be will be’ with releasing another album in the future or not. JK: “And Paul, I’m assuming you’ve got something cooking?”

PW: “No, no. No, not at the moment. I’m not in a rush at the moment. So, I’ve put enough records out in the last few years. I’m just writing with other people, doing a bit of production and stuff like that. Still trying to be creative, but I’m not in a rush to make a record.”

JK: “Yeah. Well, that’s great. I mean, for me, you taking that sense of space and needing space to explore things resulted in The Style Council, you know, and opened up all these doors we’ve been talking about.”

PW: “I wait until it comes and finds me, you know? And then I’ll make another one, possibly, or I won’t. Whatever. Yeah, what will be will be.”

Paul Weller says spending three decades answering the same questions about The Jam ‘put him off’ talking about the past

JK: “You never looked back, it seems, Paul. But you’re here tonight to talk about The Style Council, which is a rare thing, really.”

PW: “Well, I’ve talked about it in subsequent years. You know, it took, like a sort of a good, I don’t know, 20, 30 years for people, interviews to stop asking me when am I going to get The Jam back, or why did we split up, you know? So, that always put me off sort of talking about the past. You know, just like, can’t we just talk about what I’m doing now, you know? But with time and age, I don’t mind talking about these things. You know, I’m very proud of what we did and I’m glad, after many years, that we kind of got a bit more respect for the band, really. Because we got sort of trashed a lot, especially towards the end, by the press and critics and whatever. So, it’s nice to have it reevaluated and see actually, there was some great things going on there.”
