Prior to the evening concert, a special scientific gathering took place at the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), the world’s largest optical telescope. The event brought together distinguished participants including Christiana Figueres, Julie Payette, May-Britt Moser, Valentín Martínez, Alicia B. Adams, Aneeshwar Kunchala, and STARMUS co-founder Dr. Garik Israelian to celebrate scientific exploration beneath the backdrop of the renowned observatory.
Following these daytime proceedings, composer Ilan Eshkeri took the stage in Los Llanos de Aridane to present Space Station Earth, a full-length live interpretation of his double album project created in collaboration with the European Space Agency—providing a fitting musical tribute to the day’s scientific gatherings.
Positioned against high-definition digital projections of footage filmed by astronauts aboard the International Space Station, Eshkeri led a hybrid ensemble of classical players, electronic synths, and percussion. The performance followed the structural arch of the record, opening with the delicate acoustic textures of “Maps” and “Sun” before building into the driving ostinatos of “Day” and “Rocket.”
The middle sequence shifted into driving percussion for “Launch,” giving way to the sprawling atmospheric soundscapes of “International Space Station” and “Astronauts.” Visual projections transitioned from launchpad operations to orbital views of Earth’s atmosphere, synchronized with the swelling string motifs of “Night (Part 1)” and “Night (Part 2).” The score reached its dynamic peak with “Aurora,” featuring luminous synth arpeggiators, before resolving into the quiet, ambient decay of “Stars.”

Eshkeri’s score maintained a rigorous balance between cinematic scale and electronic minimalism, prioritizing steady rhythmic momentum and sustained orchestral textures that mirrored the orbital path of the ISS into the night sky.
The concert served as a triumphant and joyous finale to six extraordinary days at Starmus VIII, bringing its overarching theme, The Search for Truth, to a truly uplifting conclusion. Blending breathtaking musical composition, visual documentary art, and world-class observational science, the performance stood as a glowing testament to human wonder and creativity—a genuinely unforgettable celebration that leaves us filled with hope and eagerly anticipating next year’s edition.
