Jack Antonoff “lied” to Adam Sandler to get wife Margaret Qualley a role in Happy Gilmore 2.
News of the sequel to the 1996 golfing comedy was confirmed back in May by Netflix, who will be overseeing production of the film which started filming earlier this month.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last month (August 20), Sandler confirmed the news. “It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We came up with an idea — we wrote our asses off,” he said.
Now, Margaret Qualley has joked that her husband “lied” to Adam Sandler to get her a role in the upcoming film.
In a new interview this week with Jimmy Fallon, the actor said she can now “die happy” after landing a role in the film – even though husband Jack lied about her golfing experience to help her get the part.
Margaret Qualley said she “can die happy now” after landing a role in Happy Gilmore 2, however, her husband Jack Antonoff had to tell a little fib about her golfing experience to help get her the part.
“I saw that there was gonna to be a Happy Gilmore 2 and I emailed my agents right away and I said, ‘Anything it takes — no part is too small. Please. I gotta be a part of this, I’m begging you. Please. Whatever it takes,’” Qualley recalled, saying the original was one of her favourite films.
Fallon then went on to share a text message conversation between Antonoff and Sandler, in which the Sandler asked, “Does your wife golf at all?” The Bleachers frontman replied, “Yeah she’s actually good.”
However, that wasn’t really truthful. Qualley admitted: “What a good husband. And I can’t golf. He lied for the sake of the family…I never golfed a day in my life. I’m terrible, actually.”
The actress, who is currently appearing in The Substance added that she “took some lessons, but mostly, I’m still bad.”
She went on to say the film was “the best thing that’s ever happened to me. She added: “I’m essentially deep background, but I can die happy now.”
Back in the summer, Sandler revealed that the film will include an appearance by NFL star – and Taylor Swift beau – Travis Kelce. “What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell,” Sandler said. “He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”
The original film starred Sandler as the titular Happy Gilmore, a hockey player with anger management issues who discovers he’s also good at golf. Gilmore enters a golf tournament to win money to save his grandmother’s house, facing off with the arrogant Shooter McGavin along the way. The film also starred Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers and Bob Barker.
Sandler’s most recent film was the Netflix sci-fi drama Spaceman, in which he played the astronaut Jakub Prochazka, who encounters a creature at the edge of the solar system.
Sandler will also be releasing a new standup special on Netflix, titled Love You, on August 27.
