Jay-Z Brings 30 Years of Hits to London: 9 Best Moments From His Triumphant Return

Jay-Z has spent his summer making a case for his legacy. In July, he took over New York’s Yankee Stadium for three nights, celebrating 30 years of debut LP Reasonable Doubt, 25 years ofThe Blueprint and the defining hits that have stapled his career. Across the shows, the rapper was joined by an eye-watering selection of hip-hop and pop heavyweights, with Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Usher, Eminem, Nas, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna and Slick Rick among the guests. Billboard’s Angel Diaz, reporting from the run, called it “a masterclass show” – so the bar for what came next was already sky-high.

London, for its part, is far from unfamiliar territory. Jay first came to the capital in 1989 with his mentor Jaz-O and then rocked a British crowd at Notting Hill Carnival back in 1997; by 2008 he was headlining Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, opening with a cover of Oasis “Wonderwall” to answer critics – including one Noel Gallagher – who didn’t think hip-hop “belonged” at the festival. His only U.K. shows of 2026 landed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sept. 4 and 5, marking his first performances in the market since 2018’s On The Run II tour with wife Beyoncé, and first solo dates here since 2013’s Magna Carta World Tour.

Night one of the double-header set an impressive benchmark: Idris Elba’s spoken-word intro, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean reuniting for a run of Fugees songs, Giggs performing “Talkin’ Da Hardest” and a stadium-wide “Happy Birthday” to Beyoncé, watching on from a private suite. Night two, by comparison, was more subdued, with only Sampha and Dave joining Jay him onstage. Jay proved he didn’t need the spectacle of the night before. He had the songs – and three decades of well-honed performance – to carry the night on their own.

As Jay-Z closed out his London run on Saturday (Sept. 5), these were the nine best moments.

  • “Izzo” Gets Its Moment

The crowd came dressed for the occasion in throwback Yankees jerseys and more Timberlands than Tottenham Stadium has possibly ever seen. It tracked: much of the show hinged on Reasonable Doubt classics from 30 years ago, and deep cuts like “Dead Presidents” and “Jigga What, Jigga Who” (played for the first time in two decades) got a rare airing.

Introducing “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” Jay told the crowd The Blueprint changed his life back upon release in 2001, and they took the opening verse off his hands entirely, chanting “H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A” with absolute glee. It was a fitting reminder of just how deeply these songs have embedded themselves into popular culture.

  • An “Empire State of Mind,” Always

Despite headlining a London stadium, Jay leaned hard into where he’s from. The screens ran old-school footage of his native New York City that looked like they’d been lifted from a Spike Lee film, while he stood tall and proud in a bespoke Yankees cap, embroidered with “‘96 and forever” on the brim. It made for a neat contrast with his own history of leaving the city behind to chase something bigger in Los Angeles. When “Empire State of Mind” landed, the singalong felt like two capitals trading respect. London may have been the setting for the night, but New York was never far from the crowd’s psyche.

  • Sampha Steps in for Frank Ocean

The London-born singer made a surprise appearance for “No Church in the Wild,” taking on Frank Ocean’s hook from the Watch the Throne classic. Rarely seen on a stage of this scale, Sampha battled an out-of-sync microphone to make the moment feel bigger than its brief runtime, with the crowd carrying the song’s biggest lines themselves: “Human beings in a mob / What’s a mob to a king? / What’s a king to a God? / What’s a God to a non-believer?”

  • Dave Flies the Flag for U.K. Rap

U.K. rap got its biggest showcase of the night when Dave took the stage alone for Tems collab “Raindance.” Jay declared him as a “young legend” in front of the home crowd, and the reaction was among the loudest of the show. The Londoner had been in the crowd himself on Friday, watching from the stands, before getting his own moment under the lights 24 hours later. Handing him the stage solo, rather than folding him into the set, said plenty about how seriously Jay rates Dave as a peer.

  • A Bird’s-Eye View of the Action

As “99 Problems” kicked in, a helicopter swept low over the stadium, cutting a white spotlight across the crowd mid-song. It was a genuinely startling piece of stagecraft for a show that otherwise leaned on screens and pyro rather than gimmicks, and thousands of phones went up at once – less to capture the visual than to process that it was actually happening above a packed football ground.

  • An Icon, in a Softer Light

A mashup of “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” pulled from more romantic side of Jay’s catalogue, while “Song Cry” gave the stadium a breather. It was a reminder that this was still a set built out of some deeply personal records, framed with clips of him as a family man, and home videos of his family and engagement to Beyoncé. For an artist whose public image has long been built around his business empire and cultural influence, these glimpses offered a softer counterpoint.

  • Back-to-Back Bangers

Mashup culture runs deep in hip-hop, and Jay relished in it, slamming one blockbuster hit into the next the way an opening DJ tests a crowd’s reaction. “N–s in Paris” bled straight into “Big Pimpin’” without warning, and the transition alone was enough to set the entire stadium off – proof that Jay can land like a knockout punch after two hours of performance. After all, with three decades of material to pull from, he barely needed to let one song finish before moving onto the next.

  • Presence You Can’t Ignore

For a man in his mid-fifties, Jay’s ability to hold 50,000 people alone onstage, backed by a live band rather than a rotating cast of guests, was genuinely impressive. In a year when stadium shows have increasingly leaned on surprise cameos, this was a clear statement of star power and longevity. If night one had proved how spectacular Jay’s guestlist could be, night two demonstrated that he didn’t need it.

  • Thank You and Goodnight

In the closing minutes, Jay slowed things right down. “This place has a special meaning to me,” he told the crowd before explaining that back in 1989, his mentor Jaz-O brought him to Notting Hill for two months – a stretch that, by his own account, opened his eyes to the rest of the world. It made for a rare, unguarded piece of backstory, delivered against a hushed backing band, with the stadium hanging on his every word.

“I really appreciate you from the bottom of my heart, not only for the inspiration but for the love,” he added. After significant time away from a U.K. stage, this was an appropriately personal way for Jay to close out his return. The spectacle may have been impressive, but ultimately, the London crowd came for what has always mattered most: the songs, and the memories they carry with them.
