The pair teamed up for the single’s fantastically campy video in 2024
Sabrina Carpenter‘s music video for her Short n’ Sweet single, “Taste,” has become a standout in her cinematic universe thanks in large part to her co-star, actress Jenna Ortega. The impossible-to-murder pair chase each other with a machete, shotgun, and chainsaw throughout the fantastically campy film, which pays homage to the classics like Death Becomes Her.
While its easy to see why fans might assume the stunning bloodbath took weeks of planning between the two to pull off — given the amount of times they murder each other in the three-minute video — Ortega recently revealed that she found out she would be involved just days before shooting.
When speaking to Esquire, Ortega admitted, “I swear to you, nothing about that music video was choreographed. Like we were just running around. We had no time to prep or really talk about it.” Ortega pointed to the scene where she kisses her boyfriend before he turns into Carpenter, whom the actress promptly cuts with a pink chainsaw. “The kissing sequence was: I would stand there, I would kiss a man. They would tell me to hold it. I stayed in that position. Sabrina would come in. She would kiss me, and then we just did that a few times,” explained Ortega. “So, it was like a carousel of lovers.”
When asked what her favorite scene to shoot with Carpenter was, the Wednesday star replied, “The chainsaw sequence. I would say that just felt really camp and fun, and we had nice little outfits on.” She shared another fun detail: “I think the chainsaw had some crazy name and reference to Sabrina as well. It was called like the Espresso 3000 or something.”
Following the release of the “Taste” video in 2024, Carpenter thanked her team and gushed over her co-star. “This song is so special to me and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone that helped me bring one of my most ambitious videos to life,” wrote the Grammy-winning artist. “I had one person in mind for this and that was the one and only @jennaortega. Watching her on screen is a true dream come true and I’m so inspired, impressed, and amazed by her.”
