Jennifer Lopez Explains Why ‘Breakups Are Not a Failure’: ‘We Should Have a Party’

Jennifer Lopez has a different outlook on heartbreak than most.

J. Lo joined Subway Takes for an extended interview on Tuesday (June 30), during which she explained that ending a relationship should lead to a party because it’s the start to becoming a better version of yourself.

“Breakups are not a failure. I honestly feel like it’s a launchpad into your next best self,” she said. “We should have a party when we break up. People should say, ‘You broke up? Congratulations,’ because one, you made a decision. Two, it was probably the best thing for everybody.”

The multi-hyphenate admitted she’s been on both sides of heartbreak, but considers those who’ve had their hearts broken as the ones who came out on top.

“If you’re the one who’s being heartbroken, you’re the winner,” the singer claimed. “Because if you go around your life and you’re breaking hearts, let’s say, you’re a loser. I’ve been on both sides. We all do that. But if you’re that person, you’re never learning anything.”

Lopez continued: “I just feel like the biggest growth spurts I’ve had emotionally, mentally, psychologically have always come from a heartbreak. And that’s not just in romantic relationships — that’s in work heartbreaks.”

Jenny From the Block has been through her fair share of heartbreaks and relationships throughout her decorated career. She most recently ended her marriage to actor Ben Affleck in 2024. This came after the two were engaged in the early 2000s, then split in 2024 before rekindling their romance in 2021.

The “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” artist has also been married to Marc Anthony, Ojani Noa and Cris Judd. Lopez shares teenage twins Max and Emme with Anthony. The 56-year-old was engaged to former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez, which was called off in 2021 after about four years of dating.

In the past, J. Lo’s also been romantically linked to Drake, Diddy, actor Casper Smart and most recently, comedian Brett Goldstein.

On the music side, Lopez teamed up with Brazilian DJ Alok for the dance-friendly “Everything’s Fine,” which arrived June 26. Earlier this year, the Bronx native joined forces with David Guetta for “Save Me Tonight.”
