John Mayer and Shawn Mendes have discussed the awkwardness of having an ex-girlfriend write a song about them.
Mayer, 47, had a brief romance with Taylor Swift, 34, from late 2009 until early 2010 and she is believed to have written a number of songs about him – including her 2010 track Dear John.
While Mendes, 26, has seen exes Camila Cabello, 27, and Sabrina Carpenter, 25, seemingly write tracks about him this year following a reported love triangle – notably June Gloom and Taste respectively.
Opening up about the phenomena on the How’s Life With John Mayer show on SiriusXM, the Free Fallin’ singing host said, “You and I are both talking as people who’ve heard songs that – at least other people are saying – are references to us.”
Agreeing, Mendes chimed, “It sucks to feel like … It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed.”
Seemingly glad to have someone he could talk to about it at last, Mayer added, “You talk to a therapist and go, ‘You ever seen your ex-girlfriend on a billboard before? … Let me tell you, it’s a weird two weeks.'”
But Mendes added that there is a “beauty” to being in a situation where a woman has been moved to write a song about you.
He suggested, “The suffering that is from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time.”
