John Mellencamp dedicated the Icon Award to his daughter Teddi Mellencamp at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Thursday night.

Amid the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the reality TV star delivered an emotional speech in which she called the legendary singer-songwriter her “best friend.”

After presenting the award to John, the Crumblin’ Down hitmaker handed it back to the 44-year-old in a heartfelt moment.

“I’m gonna take this award, and I’m going to give it to Teddi, that’s yours,” he declared, seemingly referencing her recent cancer battle.

John went on to reflect on his long career in the music industry.

“I’ve been doing this (for) 50 years, and I’ve enjoyed most of it,” he joked. “I want to say that, for all you young people who are starting out, there’s nothing closer to heaven than writing a song or hearing your songs on the radio, or having a show.”

To conclude his speech, the 74-year-old commented: “Good luck to all you young people, and I hope that guys enjoy your 50 years as much as I did mine.”

John then offered up an acoustic performance of his classic songs, 1982’s Jack & Diane and 1983’s Pink Houses.

Earlier in the segment, Teddi recalled how a lyric in John’s 2008 track, Longest Days, stayed with her during her illness.

“In it he sings, ‘But nothing lasts forever / Your best efforts don’t always pay / Sometimes when you get sick, you don’t get better / That’s when life is short, even at its longest days,” she said. “Because it was a little over a year ago when I got sick, my life felt short even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever.”

Teddi was diagnosed with stage two melanoma – a form of skin cancer – in 2022. Last year, she revealed that her cancer had advanced to stage four and metastasised to her lungs and brain.

In October, doctors found “no trace of cancer”. However, she is “not considered in remission” and is being treated with ongoing immunotherapy for the disease.

Elsewhere, Teddi noted that John wasn’t going to allow the words in Longest Days to define the course of her life.

“He stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life, saved my life,” the mother-of-three added. “Oh, we’re celebrating the icon, the artist, a man the whole world knows as John Mellencamp. A man I get to call dad, and my best friend.”

Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Mariah Carey, Cher, Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Pink, and Bon Jovi.
