“Just come to the show, and fucking tell me how many bots you see”

Geese have responded to claims that they are a “psyop”, sharing that people should “just come to the show and fucking tell them how many bots you see”.

The rumours suggested that the band’s rapid rise in popularity over the past couple of years could be disingenuous, as a result of them allegedly having a huge marketing campaign planned out.

Rumours about them being an “industry plant” can be traced back over the past year, and include people sharing comments on TikTok and X/Twitter, claiming that their viral fame and their fan base could be simply chalked up to digital strategies.

Wired then shared a piece with the headline “The Fanfare Around the Band Geese Actually Was a Psyop”, digging into the claims made by some people online and explaining how “their explosion onto the scene, seemingly out of nowhere, led to an inevitable backlash.”

In the piece, cofounders of digital marketing company Chaotic Good Projects explained how their viral marketing methods work to help artists gain more momentum online. This, they shared, is by creating networks of social media pages, and using them to drive the band’s music into the recommendation algorithm.

Cofounder Adam Tarsia then told the outlet that the company engineered campaigns for both Geese and frontman Cameron Winter, and discussed how a marketing budget is common ground for any artist online.

When the Brooklyn band Geese shot to the heights of rock and roll fame at the end of 2025 (seemingly out of nowhere), it was labeled an “industry plant” by those who questioned its sudden ubiquity—and the increased social media chatter. Maybe it was.https://t.co/dgDhP49U9n

“[Geese has] worked hard building a real grassroots community to achieve all their recent success,” he added, also clarifying that his company never use “fake fan accounts” to drive hype around their music, nor “any strategies that involve the artificial inflation of streaming or social media numbers”.

“We’re protective and aware of the relationship between fan community and artist and want to aid that connection, not force it. We are vehemently opposed to the use of bot farms, and our team solely consists of genuine music fans.”

Now, speaking to Rolling Stone about the claims, Winter has said that the rumours have even made the band doubt themselves at times.

“That seemed like a reasonable explanation,” he quipped to the outlet. “We were just like, ‘Oh, my God. The whole fucking thing is fake.’ We were having a meltdown.

“Then we marched up to our label over email, the relevant team members, like, ‘How long have all our fuckin’ fans been fake, you sons of bitches?’”

He added that the band have now “learned that we should show up to Zoom meetings about how our record’s going to be advertised”, but is confident that there were never “fake fans or bots or anything” in their growth.

“It was low-effort TikTok posts that were used to boost the algorithm. They showed us samples, and it made me feel better because they were so shitty,” he said.

“Come to the show, man,” bassist Dominic DiGesu added. “Just come to the show, and fucking tell me how many bots you see. I’m glad that people have thoughts about our stuff at the end of the day… At least we’re not boring and mid.”

Even Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard has spoken to NME about the debate of Geese’s success being a “psyop”, sharing his love of the group earlier this summer and calling the rumours “fucking ridiculous”.

“That discourse around them being a psyop or an industry plant is fucking ridiculous. The only valid point I saw was that we are given the impression in a streaming economy and a social media world that we all have access to the same levers to promote ourselves,” he said.

“The reality is that it’s not true. Amplification of posts, the new payola, etc, but those guys are amazing and they deserve everything that’s coming their way. As a fan, I’m just really excited to see what they do next. I also hope that they as human beings have the fortitude to weather the weight of expectations.”

Geese are currently back on the road, celebrating their latest album ‘Getting Killed’, which has been a huge commercial success, received five stars from NME, and topped our list of the best albums of 2025.

Recent shows of theirs have included two sold-out gigs in Glasgow, where the band honoured Dolly Parton and played ‘Disco’ live for the first time. Since then, they have also drawn a raucous crowd at Reading & Leeds 2026, and headlined End Of The Road festival for the first time.

For Winter, he is set to release his very first live album and live concert film – directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and capturing his gig at Carnegie Hall.
