Kacey Musgraves believes fans didn’t ‘get’ album Star-Crossed

Kacey Musgraves believes her fans didn’t “get” her 2021 album Star-Crossed.

The country music star achieved a high point in her career when she won the Album of the Year Grammy for her critically acclaimed 2018 record Golden Hour.

Instead of giving fans more of the same, Kacey felt compelled to make Star-Crossed after going through a divorce, and she felt her fans didn’t fully appreciate the album because they were expecting a repeat of Golden Hour.

“I think a lot of people were thrown off by it because they really wanted another Golden Hour – or that’s what they were expecting – and it was a total pivot,” she said during a recent appearance on the Therapuss podcast. “You can’t recreate that magic twice, it’s going to sound fake… it’s not going to have that fresh, that life to it. Anyway, justice for Star-Crossed.”

Even though Star-Crossed didn’t receive the same reception as Golden Hour, Kacey is still really proud of the project.

“I really don’t think that they got Star-Crossed. I also was like I really don’t care. I f**king loved making that album,” she stated. “It’s something that I’m really proud of, so I don’t really care if you don’t get it. It feels good to me. But I just think it’s more so about what people were expecting, you know what I mean?”

The Follow Your Arrow hitmaker explained that she writes her music for herself, and it’s only the “cherry on the cake” when it connects with others. As such, she felt she needed to make Star-Crossed after going through a divorce from Ruston Kelly in 2020.

Kacey added that she loves when an artist “takes a chance”, even if she doesn’t personally resonate with their latest project, and hopes her fanbase can respect the fact that she didn’t “turn the same goddamn thing in or try to recreate” Golden Hour.

The 37-year-old followed up Star-Crossed with the 2024 album Deeper Well, and released her next record, Middle of Nowhere, earlier this month.
