Kacey Musgraves Teams With Mariachi Brothers Detained by ICE for Powerful Rendition of ‘Tú, Sólo Tú’

Kacey Musgraves gave Cinco de Mayo festivities an early start on Monday and Tuesday night (May 4-5), during the second and third evening of her three-night run at Texas’ legendary Gruene Hall, a storied venue that’s been standing since 1878.

Decked out in denim shorts, the country-pop superstar paused her Middle of Nowhere 2026 album setlist to deliver a passionate rendition of “Tú, Sólo Tú,” a classic ranchera ballad that she sung entirely in near-perfect Spanish. But what made the performance even more special was her onstage accompaniment: The Mariachi Brothers, teenage siblings from McAllen, Texas, who earlier this year made national headlines when they and their family were detained by ICE.

The Mariachi Brothers — Antonio, 18; Caleb, 14; and Joshua Gámez-Cuéllar, 12 — are no strangers to the spotlight, having previously played Capitol Hill and other notable stages. But their presence at the Gruene Hall residency carried extra gravity, especially in light of their detainment.

Musgraves’ song choice, “Tú, Sólo Tú,” is a definitive nod to mariachi tradition, rooted in the golden age of ranchera music. Written by Mexican composer Felipe Valdés Leal in 1949, the song has been famously recorded by Pedro Infante and interpreted by other prominent Mexican artists and actors such as Miguel Aceves Mejía, Luis Pérez Meza and Rosita Quintana.

Decades later, “Tú, Sólo Tú” was revitalized by music icons including Luis Miguel and Linda Ronstadt, who featured the track on her 1987 Grammy-winning album, Canciones de Mi Padre. For many fans, however, the song is inseparable from Selena Quintanilla’s iconic rendition; she recorded her version for the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco. The cover was posthumously released as the first single from her landmark bilingual album Dreaming of You (1995).

Musgraves sung with range and vibrato. Accompanied by the brothers on harp, brass and guitars, they stepped into the spotlight with humility and confidence — one of them donning a cowboy hat and a skeleton-painted face.

She capped her Gruene Hall residency with a crowning moment on Tuesday (May 5) by teaming up with Miranda Lambert for their collab “Horses and Divorces.”
