Keke Palmer Addresses Break-Up and Usher Serenade Drama on ‘My Confession’

Keke Palmer drops the whole story behind that infamous dust-up involving her ex and that Usher serenade in Las Vegas in her new song “My Confession.”

As the title suggests, “My Confession” is a reimagining of Usher’s classic, “Confessions Part II,” with Palmer fitting new lyrics about the drama that erupted around her back in 2023. For those that don’t remember, a video of Usher singing “There Goes My Baby” to Palmer during his Vegas residency went viral, prompting Palmer’s ex Darius Jackson to complain on Twitter, “It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom.”

Jackson, who shares a child with Palmer, faced swift and widespread backlash, doubled down, deactivated his social media accounts, then returned without apologizing or addressing comments many saw as misogynistic.

At the time, Palmer acknowledged the controversy in oblique ways on social media and in interviews. Most pointedly, she starred in Usher’s music video “Boyfriend,” a song that includes the lines, “Somebody said that your boyfriend’s looking for me/Well, he should know I’m pretty easy to find/Just look for me wherever he sees you.”

It’s been nearly two years since then, and during the interim Palmer and Jackson found themselves locked in a custody battle over their son, and both accused the other of physical and emotional abuse. While the dust appears to have settled for the most part — Palmer said last year that they’d found a balance on custody that works for both parties — the release of “My Confession” suggests Palmer still had some things to get off her chest.

In a note shared on social media, Palmer said “My Confession” was “exactly what it sounds like — me giving voice to the feelings I buried.”

She continued: “Sometimes the closure we need doesn’t come from a conversation—it comes from being honest with ourselves. That’s what this song is. My peace. My clarity. My way of letting go… I’m not here to play perfect. I’m here to be honest. I’m just here to be Keke.”

Though it clocks in at less than two minutes, Palmer packs a lot of frustration, dirty laundry, and clarity into the track. “My fans was dragging you because you had the nerve,” Palmer sings at one point, “Almost turned me into a cliché/Thought having your baby would make me wanna stay/Your family, they don’t like me, that’s fine/But when did you get back on they side?/When I met you, you hated them like you hating on me now/Fuck your projections/These are my confessions.”
