The singer and host opened the show with a Kellyoke cover of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” noting, “Light has been a constant theme for us on this show since the beginning”

The Kelly Clarkson Show has kicked off its seventh season. Kelly Clarkson returned to daytime TV on Monday, Sept. 29, with her first episode back since the death of her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. During the off-season, the singer passed the time with her Las Vegas residency, but cancelled the remaining shows to be present for her two children with Blackstock.

Clarkson opened The Kelly Clarkson Show‘s season premiere with a Kellyoke cover of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” noting, “It’s a perfect song to kick us off. Light has been a constant theme for us on this show since the beginning. We’ve seen a lot in the past six years, and sometimes the world can be very heavy. But I’ve always said, my favorite part of doing this job, and I stand by it, is finding the light and shining it on people are really trying to make a difference and just trying to make the world better place.”

From there, Clarkson launched into an interview with Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. She hasn’t extensively commented on Blackstock’s death publicly. Her last statement arrived when she first cancelled her Las Vegas concerts. “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “I need to be fully present for them.”

Blackstock died of skin cancer in August at the age of 48. The talent manager’s family shared a statement announcing his death, but shared few details about his illness. “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years,” Blackstock’s family said. “He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.”
