Kyle Gass is confident that Tenacious D “will return” after his bandmate Jack Black distanced himself from him over a controversial President Trump joke.

In July 2024, a day after the failed assassination attempt on the U.S. President, the comedy rock duo held a concert in Sydney, Australia on Kyle’s birthday. While he blew out the candles on his birthday cake, Jack told him to make a wish and he replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Kyle swiftly came under fire for his joke and the rest of the tour was cancelled. He issued an apology, and his famous bandmate put out a statement distancing himself from Kyle, sparking concern for their band’s future.

Speaking for the first time about the controversy, Kyle insisted that the Tribute hitmaking duo will be back.

“We’re gonna come back – it’s gonna be bigger than Oasis!” he jokingly declared. “We will serve no D-wine before it’s D-time – but we will be back. We will return.”

The musician revealed that he and the School of Rock star “hashed it out” after the incident, and although it was “hard”, they are now “all good”.

“At the end of the day, we’re friends. I’ve known Jack since he was 18, and it’s been such a long marriage, really. You go up and down, and we’ve always taken long breaks,” he said.

The 65-year-old added that he understood why the Kung Fu Panda star had to put out his own statement, acknowledging that he “had to protect himself from his loose-cannon partner over here”.

“Jack has this magnificent career; I can’t even count the franchises now. So as hard as it was, I just had to take the long ride home,” he stated, noting that he understood why they needed to take a break.

Addressing the incident, Kyle confessed that he has “felt terrible ever since”, adding, “It’s one of those things, once it was picked up, it just got worse and worse. It was a Defcon 2 for sure in the camp. And I did it. It was hard to take responsibility for it, but it was my f**k-up.”
