Lankum’s Radie Peat announces debut solo album ‘No Human Tongue Can Tell’ with stirring new single ‘The Moon and Stars’

Lankum vocalist Radie Peat has announced her debut solo album ‘No Human Tongue Can Tell’ and released a haunting new single ‘The Moon and Stars’. Listen below.

Back in July, Peat shared her first solo single ‘Still I Love Him’, her poignant interpretation of the traditional love song of the same name.

Now, she’s revealed that the track will be on her debut solo album, which is due to be released on November 13 via Rough Trade Records. You can pre-save/pre-order it here.

The announcement comes alongside a new single, ‘The Moon and Stars’, which sees her rewrite parts of traditional folk lyrics to channel anger.

“There are coded references to unwanted pregnancies and abortions within the song”, Peat explained in a press release. “As well as references to rue, a herb which was used to cause miscarriage, I wanted to represent these experiences from the woman’s perspective – to connect us with her experience”. Listen below.

Peat describes the album as “communicating hundreds of years of other people’s experiences, that have been absorbed into the songs from generations and generations before you – binds you with a worldliness beyond the sum of your own experience.”

She explained that the album has been in the works for a while, “It’s been ticking along in the background of my head for probably 15 years or so.

“When I was in my 20s I watched a documentary on Mike Oldfield making ‘Tubular Bells’ and the idea just stuck that I would like to try to record like that, where you write and play all the intersecting parts. I found the idea of being limited by your own mind and abilities, with all the blind spots and personal preferences, very appealing.”

Peat went on to say: “They are largely songs of female struggle, suffering, strength and endurance. But there are many about love as well, with all the complications that brings.”

Radie Peat’s ‘No Human Tongue Can Tell’ tracklist is:

1. ‘Hares on the Mountain’
2. ‘The Moon and Stars’
3. ‘Willow Garden’
4. ‘Luisne’
5. ‘Same Old Man’
6. ‘Dark Hore on The Wind’
7. ‘Still I Love Him’
8. ‘Bonnie Boy’
9. ‘Cailín Deas’

Peat will soon play a string of live shows in the UK, Ireland and Europe. She’s also announced an additional London date in May, and a Paris show in February. Tickets are available here, and you can find a full list of dates below.

Peat is best known as one of the four members of Lankum, whose Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello-nominated fourth studio album ‘False Lankum’ was released in 2023 to widespread acclaim.

The band have also recently found their music reaching new audiences on screen, with ‘Katie Cruel’ and ‘The Granite Gaze’ appearing in Netflix’s House Of Guinness, and ‘Hunting The Wren’ soundtracking the final scene of the recent Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man.

Last year, Lankum also shared a haunting cover of The Specials’ ‘Ghost Town’, originally created for Oona Doherty’s dance show ‘Specky Clark’.
