K-pop stars and NME cover alumni LE SSERAFIM returned to headline gaming convention BlizzCon last night (September 13), three years after they last closed out the weekend-long event in 2023. This followed an extended partnership with free-to-play team-based shooter game Overwatch since November of that year. Check out footage, the setlist and more details about the show below.
Taking to the Main Stage at Anaheim Convention Center in California, USA, the multinational quintet comprising members from South Korea, Japan and the US zipped through a truncated 45-minute set – following two days of panels, presentations and exclusive game reveals at the previously-annual conference held by development studio Blizzard.
“What’s up, BlizzCon?” New York-born singer and rapper Huh Yunjin asked the raucous crowd after LE SSERAFIM kicked off their performance with Latin-flavoured bop ‘Boompala’ – released in May of this year and including an interpolation of iconic ’90s favourite ‘Macarena’ by Spanish pop dup Los Del Rio. “We’re so happy to be back here after three years, thank you so much for having us… We just recently came out with a new single called ‘Made My Night’ and we’ll be performing it here for the first time tonight so please look forward to that. In the meantime, we have just started so hold on tight and get ready to celebrate with us.”
Kim Chaewon, Sakura, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha and Hong Eunchae then launched into the techno rave of ‘CELEBRATION’, lead single from their second studio album ‘Pureflow Pt. 1’, next rattling through ‘Creatures’, ILLIT and KATSEYE collab ‘ICONIC BY MISTAKE’, ‘1-800-hot-n-fun’ and ‘Saki’.
The band then paused for a few moments to explain their outfits to the crowd, each designed to pay homage to a different playable character from Overwatch. Yunjin revealed her hooded leather ensemble was inspired by Danish marksman Freja, before the other members highlighted the characters they wished to honour from the game as well. They also made time to compliment the cosplayers sitting in the front row. “And also, congrats to Team Korea, champion of this year’s Overwatch World Cup,” Yunjin added, referencing the esports final that took place at BlizzCon earlier the same day. We are so excited for you guys and we send the best support and congratulations to you.” They then dedicated ‘Perfect Night’, released as part of the first wave of Overwatch x LE SSERAFIM content in 2023, to “our Overwatch family”.
The final six songs in the setlist included ‘So Cynical (Badum)’ and SPAGHETTI’, from last year, 2024’s trap-inspired hip-hop tune ‘CRAZY’, fan-favourite ‘ANTIFRAGILE’, early banger ‘UNFORGIVEN’ and, of course, brand new single ‘Made My Night’ – concocted as the latest exclusive drop coming out of LE SSERAFIM’s relationship with Overwatch. “The song was actually inspired by the relationship between [playable characters] D.Mon and D.Va,” said Kazuha, “it’s about the special chemistry between friends.” Yunjin added: “Just like us! This one is for all the D.Mon and D.Va fans out there.”
