Leighton Meester had no idea two of her old songs were released on streaming services this summer.
The Gossip Girl actress made her first foray into music in the late 2000s and put out a handful of songs ahead of her debut album, which was delayed and then ultimately shelved in 2010.
However, two songs made for that unreleased album – Body Control and Your Lies Are the Truth / Almost Perfect – appeared on streaming services in August, making fans wonder if a return to music was imminent.
Addressing the unexpected release in an interview with People, Meester admitted she was totally unaware that those songs were added to streaming.
“I hate to say, but I don’t exactly know what (happened),” Meester shared. “I didn’t know about that at all, but I think sometimes a contract randomly expires and then is renewed with some streaming platforms, so that kind of thing just pops up and it seems like it’s newly on there.”
She continued, “I’ve had other stuff going on. I had a show come out this year, and I was working on that, so I just hadn’t really paid attention.”
The 39-year-old noted she has no hard feelings about the surprise release and is glad people are now able to hear those songs.
In the late 2000s, Meester released the tracks Somebody to Love and Your Love’s a Drug, appeared on Cobra Starship’s song Good Girls Go Bad, and sang some country tunes in the 2010 film Country Strong. After a break, she returned to music with her 2014 debut album Heartstrings before focusing on acting again.
The Buccaneers actress told the publication that she would like to pursue music again when she has time in her schedule.
“I enjoy making music, and I want to continue doing it, hopefully sometime soon,” she added. “I’ve had, I guess you could say, a day job, so sometimes that ends up being something that I don’t do as often as I’d like, but I want to continue it.”
